About Adult Contemporary

Contemporary Dance? For Adults? What’s that?

Contemporary dance is an intense combination of ballet, jazz and modern technique. It’s about expressing emotions through dance and using the body to create unique lines, shapes and non-traditional movements to give dance a deeper meaning. Heavily based on the teachings of Martha Graham and her outlook and the modern dance form, Wild Lily’s contemporary dance classes are a great way to stretch and help elongate the entire body.

What to Expect

This is a class for real women & men of any age or body type, who want to explore their creative side, and gain the grace and intention that contemporary dance offers.  It is designed for the absolute beginner, and aims to improve posture and carriage and flexibility while progressing at the speed dictated by the needs of the group. There will be a complete warm up and cool down each class, and you should be expected to participate physically as well as verbally in the class, working as part of the group.

Your instructor may guide the class through movements that do not work well with your own body – if you reach a point where the movements feel strenuous or painful, please let your instructor know and she will find a modification that is suitable for you.

What to Wear & Bring

Students will need close fitting, comfortable exercise wear that will not restrict movement – we suggest crop-length exercise pants, but comfort is key.  No shoes are required, barefoot dancing is preferred.  If you wish to wear a light dance shoe or foot thong you may.

Please see our list of classes below to read class descriptions and class offerings. Please note that not all of these classes are offered each semester.

Contemporary Classes

Contemporary: Beginner

Exploration and Movement Potential
Class Length: Varies each term. Typically 60 minutes weekly.
Skill Level: Beginner. No previous experience necessary.
Please Wear: Mid-length yoga/exercise pants and a fitted top. Barefoot preferable, but light footwear is permitted.
Please Bring: A water bottle is advised. A notebook may be useful.
This class begins with an intense stretch with elastibands, which warm and help elongate the muscles.  It then moves into various travel sequences to develop texture and musicality.  The majority is then spent on routine and working to a set piece of music to tell a story.  Finally, a cool down period and reflection on the class and what you have achieved.
